“GEORGIA CHARM”
Jekyll Island, GA, is a gorgeous, serene, and pristine southern island that embodies all that summer is supposed to be… the beach, the sun, the swaying of Spanish moss trees in a cool wind, the high dunes, the gift shops, the great beach bars and restaurants, the mini-golf, the golf carts on the roadways, the summer bungalows painted blue and yellow, the long and winding bike trails that take you past the Historic District’s summer homes of the rich and famous from the Guilded Age of the 1920’s…it was a lot to take in, but for two days we were content with stepping back into that summer state of mind and place.

We learned that the Rockefellers, Goodyears, Pulitzers, and Morgans all owned homes here. We marveled at the Revival architecture of the ‘20’s and the mid-century modern styling of the 1960’s homes lined up on sizeable lots of tree-lined streets.
We rode our bikes 14 miles around most of the island straddling between the beach to our left and the bay to our right. Aside from this being my longest single bike ride to date, I found the scenery and the smells so refreshing.
However, the only campground on the island was another thing altogether. Where the rest of the island offered space and serenity, this campground was jammed packed with rows of RV spots lined up on top of one another. I felt like I was in the ‘hood of some inner city, with the occasional Spanish moss tree now and then. And don’t get me stated on the bugs! So many mosquitoes!

How very disappointing that our camp didn’t reflect the beauty of Jekyll Island. I am sure Gary will be sending a review soon enough.
The best part of any trip or vacation for me is always the inevitability of returning home. And as all good road trips require, ours usually begins and ends with a trip to Jacksonville, Florida, to see our sons and now our Avaya, the most adorable, magnificent little 6-month-old we know.
Returning home this time means so much more to us now. It means returning to a new beginning – again – and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
