Although we’ve been to Patoka Lake many times over the past six years, this stay has felt brand new — thanks to our beautiful RV lot with a spectacular view. This is exactly what we had in mind when we imagined the RV lifestyle: scenic vistaswarm weatherfriendly travelers, and plenty to explore. The area is full of hiking and biking trails, water activities, a nature center, and — perhaps most importantly — a winery and BBQ joint nearby.

Our first site at the lake was lot #307, nestled between two great families and offering a perfect view. We arrived on Memorial Day, and by 10 a.m., the campground was packed. But by 4 p.m., the place had mostly cleared out — only two RVs remained. Ironically, one of them was parked in the site we had originally reserved: #318. In a twist of happy coincidence, we were reassigned to #307 — and honestly, everything about the new spot was better.

Of course, it was short-lived. By Thursday, we had to relocate a few spots over to lot #305. Still a good site — out of the way and with a partial view — but now we found ourselves in the middle of what could only be described as the Westminster Dog Show: RV Edition. I kid you not, there are at least 25 dogs in our little cul-de-sac this week.

And yet, in the midst of all the barking, yapping, and slightly tipsy dog owners holding court, Gary and I couldn’t help but feel proud. Our two pups have handled it all like champs. I think Gary may have gained a new appreciation for them — and honestly, so have I.
